Ballibay is a fine and performing arts summer camp for boys and girls ages 6 through 16, established in 1964. Various Jobs available...

Each summer, 50 talented men and women gather on our Pennsylvania mountaintop to create an exciting, rewarding and safe environment for children. Ballibay staff members are creative individuals who care about children, education and the arts; they are students, educators and artists with diverse backgrounds and experience who share a common interest in nurturing, supporting and teaching young people in a non-competitive, individual choice setting.

Benefits: Staff members are employed for 8 to 11 weeks. Staff members can draw on their earned salary at any time. Room and board are provided, and it is quite possible to live at camp all summer completely expense free.

All staff members attend a complete orientation before camp begins. Staff members receive 1 day off per week and every other night off. All camp facilities are available to staff members during their time off, except horseback riding. The food is excellent for omnivores and vegetarians alike. On-campus facilities specifically for staff members include laundry, computers, e-mail, a phone, and a comfy lounge with a TV/VCR, refrigerator, pool table, and more.

Most teaching staff members are also cabin counselors. Cabin counselors live with at least one other staff member and 10-14 campers. Ballibay is an activity-oriented camp; staff members spend only 2.5 hours each day with their cabin groups and 5.5 hours a day in specialty areas working with motivated campers! ART INSTRUCTORS

Art Instructors at Ballibay teach in our 'open studio' art program. Each camper has his or her own schedule, and campers interested in art will come into the studios to begin new projects, continue working on projects already started, or participate in demonstarions or informal classes.

Our art staff's role is to provide inspiration, assistance and materials for the campers who wish to work on projects, and to organize demonstrations and informal classes for students interested in learning specific skills. Our art department organizes several art exhibitions each summer, but these are not the focus of our program; our art staff spend the majority of their time working one on one with motivated campers in a relaxed, creative environment.

CAMP NURSE

Camp Nurses at Ballibay are available to assist campers and staff with minor medical problems, and to work with the camp administration in the event of more serious medical problems. Camp nurses maintain a record of all accidents, illnesses, and medications, and control and administer medications brought to camp by campers and staff members.

Ballibay nurses are available to campers and staff at almost all times, but are not tied down to an 'infirmary' setting. Nurses live in either the cabin area or in private quarters, but do not have any cabin responsibilities.

DANCE INSTRUCTORS

Dance Instructors at Ballibay teach in a multi-faceted dance program.

Our program includes:
traditional dance class offerings
choreography and direction of performance-oriented works for our two Music and Dance Reviews each summer
assistance to campers developing their own choreography for talent shows
regular stretching classes and guided warm ups open to all campers
other classes in styles and techniques in which our instructors are skilled
Our dance program is open to campers of all ages, skill and experience levels. Like all of our camp programs, we emphasize individual growth and a non-competitive learning environment.

PIANO ACCOMPANIST & TEACHER

Piano Accompanists usually accompany two musical theatre productions during the summer and contribute to the musical direction of these productions, including teaching chorus and solo parts to vocalists and rehearsing independently with singers.

Accompanists also teach piano during part of their day, and are often called upon to accompany campers for talent show performances. Practice time is also included in the schedule.

RADIO INSTRUCTORS

Radio Instructors teach individual and group classes in radio based on camper interest, develop ideas for radio shows with campers, and help campers organize and produce their own radio shows.

Camper radio shows are broadcast live during activity periods, and recorded for re-broadcast during cabin times using a short-range FM radio transmitter. Radio staff also organize and direct our 'dj dances' during the summer, teaching campers live dj skills and coordinating a full evening of music.

MUSIC & ROCK'N'ROLL INSTRUCTORS

Music Instructors teach individual and group classes based on camper interest, and organize bands and ensembles based on the compatibility and skills of interested campers.

Our Rock'n'Roll Program is part of our music program; Rock'n'Roll is a term we use very broadly to include modern and classic rock, pop, folk, and other styles.

Our Rock'n'Roll instructors teach guitar, bass, drums and recording. Bands are organized and directed by the rock staff, and bands perform in our two band nights each summer and in selected talent shows. We also place an emphasis on recording, and our rock staff teach four-track recording and mixing.

TECHNICAL THEATRE STAFF

Technical Theater Staff at Ballibay design and implement lighting, sound and sets for nearly 40 productions each summer; plays, musicals, talents shows, rock-n-roll band nights and more. Productions vary in complexity from easily implemented indoor shows to complex outdoor 'environmental' productions.

Ballibay technical theatre positions are only for people with a real love for this field; the positions are mentally and physically challenging, but extremely rewarding in terms of accomplishments and experience. A summer of Ballibay tech will leave you feeling that you have really done something with your summer!

Technical theatre staff are invited and encouraged to make teaching a part of their job; many of our campers are interested in the technical aspects of theatre; from running the lighting board or followspot all the way to working as design assistants. Most technical theatre staff are also cabin counselors (see benefits section).

TENNIS INSTRUCTORS

Tennis Instructors at Ballibay teach tennis to campers with a wide variety of skill and interest levels. Most teaching is done in small groups, and individual instruction is available for serious students. Tennis instructors also supervise 'open tennis' times.

Often our Tennis Instructors have some experience teaching golf, and will teach golf to interested campers on our on-campus driving range and putting green.

THEATRE DIRECTORS

Theatre Directors at Ballibay direct three or four productions over a seven week period. One or two of these productions will be full-length large cast productions, the others will be one-act or script-in-hand, smaller cast shows.

Directors cast their own shows from a pool of all interested campers, and meet with their casts 2-3 hours each day for rehearsals. Rehearsal periods vary from 5-25 days depending upon the scale of the show.

When not involved in rehearsals, directors have time to do production work, and are expected to teach several informal classes each week. Most directors are also cabin counselors (see benefits section).

COSTUME STAFF

Costume Staff at Ballibay design and construct wardrobes for about 25 productions each summer; modern and classical plays, musicals, music and dance reviews, and more. Productions vary in complexity from farily easily small-cast shows to casts of 20-50 performers most with more than one costume change.

Ballibay costume positions are only for people with a real love for designing and making costumes; the positions are mentally and physically challenging, but extremely rewarding in terms of accomplishments and experience. A summer of Ballibay costume will leave you feeling that you have really done something with your summer!

Costume staff are invited and encouraged to make teaching a part of their job; many of our campers are interested in costume design & construction and want to learn from and work with our staff. Most costume staff are also cabin counselors (see benefits section).

VIDEO STAFF

Our Video Staff are teachers, videographers and technicians. During the daytime activity periods our video staff work with interested campers, teaching camera and editing skills, live multi-camera production skills, and working with campers in developing and producing short video projects: from soap operas to music videos to experimental video artworks. Also during the day one staff person sets up for the live three-camera shoot of the evening's production. During each evening production (we have nearly 40 productions over the course of the summer) one member of the video team is the director of a live three-camera shoot, directing campers they have trained who are operating the cameras!

Ballibay video positions are only for people who really love making and teaching video; these positions are mentally and physically challenging, but extremely rewarding in terms of accomplishments and experience. A summer of Ballibay video will leave you feeling that you have really done something with your summer!
