Summer Camp USA allows you to work as a camp counsellor in the most challenging and rewarding summer camp jobs you can imagine! As a camp counsellor at a US Summer Camp you spend 8-10 weeks living with and leading kids in beautiful surroundings. Your job is to teach amazing activities and help them have life-changing experiences.

The skills and confidence that you will gain as a counsellor are invaluable and look great on your CV. Plus you get to make friends with people from all over the world.

Summer Camp USA starts around June each year and goes for 8-10 weeks. Once you finish you receive a salary and then you are then free to travel the USA for up to 30 days.

What kind of jobs do summer camps in American have?

IEP has sent 1000's of Kiwis to summer camp in America to teach sports and other activities for years. The Summer Camps in America love to hire hard working, enthusiastic, qualified young kiwis to be responsible camp counsllors.

As a camp counsellor you generally live in a cabin with about 3-10 children and share the responsibility for them with other consellors. You will be expected to set a good example, ensuring the children keep themselves and the cabin clean and that they eat their food and follow the camp routine. There are types of counsellors; general and specialist. Nearly all Summer Camp USA participants are general counsellors, even those who have specialist duties. General counsellors will need experience working with children in a leadership role. Specialist conselling requires qualifications or skills in a particular field or activity.

Hot Summer Camp Jobs

Horse Riding: Summer Camp USA combine the responsibilities of teaching riding, looking after the horses and being a camp counsellor. As a riding specialist, you could be teaching skills and giving lessons for several hours a day, usually in hour-long periods, generally in addition to caring for the horses. Riding programmes vary greatly from camp to camp and may consist of simply teaching some horse care and ring work, or of more advanced lessons plus trail rides and even gymkhanas.

Swimming & Lifegaurding: Swimming staff on Summer Camp USA usually combine the responsibilities of lifeguarding and/or teaching swim with being a cabin counsellor. It?s a fun and rewarding, yet challenging opportunity to enhance your skills, develop your personal experience and have a great summer. Working on the waterfront is one of the best places to be at camp. As a swimming instructor, you will be teaching skills and giving lessons for four or more hours each day, normally in hour-long periods. In addition, if your camp organises a swim team, campers will try out to represent their camp in inter-camp tournaments and swim meets throughout the summer. You may be asked to coach the teams. On other camps, swimming may be a purely recreational, fun activity. As a lifeguard, your responsibilities will be to carry out lifeguarding duties as necessary to maintain a safe swimming environment for campers and staff.

Ropes & Climbing Activities: Being a ropes and/or climbing instructor onSummer Camp USA combines the responsibilities of leading adventure activities with being a camp counsellor. It is a fun and rewarding, yet challenging opportunity to enhance your teaching skills, develop your personal experience and have a great summer! You are likely to be working with a team of fellow counsellors on a programme designed to enhance and develop the campers? skills and proficiency over the summer. You may be working with children of all ages and abilities, usually in small groups according to age. Your responsibilities may also include the maitenance and upkeep of the climbing equipment or ropes/adventure course.

Outdoor Pioneering: Camp programmes involving hiking, camping, camp-craft and other outdoorsy activities have various names at camp e.g. Pioneering, Outdoor Living Skills (OLS), Trek, Adventure (usually also including ropes or climbing), Tripping, or other variations. Pioneering counsellors on Summer Camp USA combine the responsibilities of leading hiking and camping trips with being a camp counsellor.

Canoe & Kayaking: Being a canoe or kayak counsellor on Summer Camp USA combines the responsibilities of teaching on the waterfront with being a camp counsellor. Teaching canoeing or kayaking usually means working in idyllic surroundings, but it can be an energy-zapping job! You could be working on the water for several hours a day, often in high temperatures, so stamina, patience and motivation are very important! On the other hand, on a very hot day, where better to be than on the water?

Sailing: Being a sailing counsellor on Summer Camp USA combines the responsibilities of teaching on the water and being a camp counsellor. Programmes vary greatly from camp to camp and so you could be working with several other sailing counsellors, or perhaps with just one or two others. Either way, you?ll be expected to adhere to basic programme guidelines which aim to teach and improve campers? skills and proficiency in sailing

Tennis: As a tennis counsellor on Summer Camp USA combines the responsibilities of teaching tennis with being a camp counsellor. As a tennis instructor, you?ll need to be hard-working, motivated and confident in teaching tennis. You may be on the courts for several hours a day, often in high temperatures, so stamina is important! Patience is also important, as hot and disinterested children can be a tough challenge!

Gymnastics: Being a gymnastics counsellor on Summer Camp USA combines the responsibilities of teaching a gymnastics programme with being a camp counsellor. You must be motivated, hard-working and safety conscious, as well as being confident in teaching gymnastics. It is a fun and rewarding, yet challenging way to spend the summer, teaching a sport you love while enhancing your skills!
